Introduction

A Sequence is a set of things that are in order. Sequences have important applications in several spheres of human activities. If the sequence goes on forever it is called an infinite sequence, otherwise it is a finite sequence.

Pre-Requisites:

• Number theory • Pattern Recognition

Activity:

Observe different quantities in your daily life that form a sequence like your daily routine, the queue for the bus, your marks in a subject over the semester etc.

Real Life Question:

What do population of human beings or bacteria at different times , the amount of money deposited in a bank over a number of years , Depreciated values of a certain commodity represent?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Sequence A Sequence is a set of things that are in order.
Series A series is the sum of the terms of a sequence. Finite sequences and series have defined first and last terms, whereas infinite sequences and series continue indefinitely.
Progression Sequences, following specific patterns are called progressions.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Real life uses :

Sequences and series are used to find patterns in a given set of numbers. They help us make use of arithmetic mean, arithmetic progressions, geometric progression, sum of a series etc to calculate different quantities in our daily life.

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Score report Your internal marks of a subject over a period of time form a sequence.
Heights of students in a class The heights of all students in a class together form a sequence.
What you learn in Theory:

We learn about sequences, series and progressions.

What you learn in Practice:

We learn how to use these concepts to calculate quantities in our daily life.
