Topic Name : Range
Sub Topic Name : Range
Introduction

• Statistics deals with data collected for specific purposes. • A measure of central tendency gives idea where data is centred. • In order to have better data interpretation we should know how data is scattered and this measure is known as Measure of Dispersion. • We have different measures of dispersion and one such measure is RANGE.

Pre-Requisites:

• Knowledge of representing data graphically and in tabular form. • Knowledge of measure of central tendency of data, measure of dispersion.

Activity:

You will observe that data with maximum range is more scattered than data with minimum range.

Real Life Question:

In a social survey, minimum and maximum respondent ages are respectively 18 and 65. What is the range?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Statistics Statistics is a method of gathering, analyzing and making conclusions from data.
Measure of Dispersion Measure of dispersion is describing spread of data.
Range Range is defined as difference between maximum and minimum observations of data.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Graph paper Collect data of runs of two different batsmen and calculate range of runs of two batsmen. Plot these data on graph paper.
Real life uses :

Range is a measure of dispersion which is used in Quality Control Methods. Range is useful tool when there are number of observations.

Places to visit :

Look for two maximum used commodities in your house and make two data sets. Calculate range of data.

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Quality control methods Range has its application in quality control methods which are used to maintain quality of products produced in factories. Quality of products must be kept in certain range of values.
What you learn in Theory:

Range is the difference between maximum and minimum observations of data.

What you learn in Practice:

If number of observations is too large then range gives a good sense of data distribution. For example consider a health survey of 10,000 people from different backgrounds. In this case range is a useful tool to measure dispersion of different health issues among people.
