Biodegradable Polymers
Chapter Name : Polymers
Sub Topic Code : 102_12_15_05_01
Topic Name : Biodegradable Polymers
Sub Topic Name : Biodegradable Polymers
Introduction

1.Due to the environmental concerns, certain new biodegradable synthetic polymers have been designed and developed. 2.These polymers contain functional groups similar to the functional groups present in bio-polymers. 3.Aliphatic polyesters are one of the important classes of biodegradable polymers. 4. PHBV is obtained by the co-polymerization of 3-hydroxybutanoic acid and 3 - hydroxypentanoic acid. 5. PHBV is used in specialty packaging, orthopedic devices and in controlled release of drugs. 6. PHBV is degraded by bacteria in the environment. 7. Nylon-2, nylon-6 is an alternating poly-amide co-polymer of glycine (H2N–CH2–COOH) and amino caproic acid [H2N (CH2)5 COOH] and is biodegradable.
