In the real life we see a lot of patterns everywhere and mathematics has also got its pattern, which are called relations. In this topic we will see how links between two elements lead to a relation. Special types of relations are knows as functions.
Sets, their representation and its types, Cartesian products
• On a graph sheet draw X, Y- axis and the origin. • Plot (1, 1) and (8, 8) and join them. • Mark any 10 points on the X-axis and join them to the drawn line such the lines are parallel to Y- axis. • Find the co-ordinate of the intersection points and find the relation between the x and y coordinates.
How does the temperature vary on Celsius and Fahrenheit scale?
Key Words | Definitions (pref. in our own words) |
---|---|
Relation | Set of ordered pairs. |
Function | Special type of relation that gives exactly one output for an input. |
Ordered Pair | A pair of element grouped together in a particular order. |
Gadgets | How it can be used |
---|---|
Graph sheet | For plotting an equation. |
Scale | For drawing lines |
Relations are mainly used to study patterns. Using function we can find how a particular quantity is varying with respect to another one?
Stairs (height of each stair is more than the previous one as you move upward)
Examples | Explainations |

Patterns on the tiles | These patterns also sow a relationship among them that they are equal. |
What is an ordered pair? What is a relation? What is a function? Difference between them.
Wherever there is a pattern there is a relationship.
