Chapter Name : Heredity And Evolution
Sub Topic Code : 103_10_09_02_04
Topic Name : Heredity
Sub Topic Name : How Do These Traits Get Expressed?
Introduction

Progeny gets its traits in a pair. In this pair, one trait is from father and one from mother. These traits get transferred from parents to progeny in the form of chromosomes.

Pre-Requisites:

Understanding of rules of inheritance and Mendel’s experiments.

Activity:

Cross a TT plant with a tt plant virtually in your notebook and work out the gene combinations of the first progeny F1. See which traits are inherited and exhibited in the first progeny.

Real Life Question:

Can a human baby be totally alike either of her parents i.e. totally like mother or totally like father?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Gene Trait Chromosome Section of DNA that provides information for the formation of a protein. Any feature, inherited at birth or acquired later. Pieces on DNA.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
You get one chromosome containing one trait from each of your parents. Hence if your mother is short, there are still chances that you can be tall if your father is tall.
What you learn in Theory:

Each progeny cell has two copies of chromosomes, one each from the male and female parents.

What you learn in Practice:

How progeny of sexually reproducing organisms have traits from both the parents.
