Topic Name : Animal Tissues
Sub Topic Name : Epithelial Tissue
Introduction

Epithelial tissues = covering or protective tissues in the animal body.

Pre-Requisites:

Animals have specialized cells to perform functions. Each organ comprising of tissues are responsible for specific functions.

Activity:

View the diagrammatic presentation of the tissues.

Real Life Question:

What covers our organs and cavities within the body?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Simple squamous epithelium Single layer of flat cells in contact with basement membrane.
Stratified squamous epithelium Consists of flattened epithelial cells arranged in layers upon a basement membrane
Columnar epithelium The length of the cells is much more than their width, arranged like columns.
Ciliated columnar epithelium Rectangular in shape and have hair-like protrusions called cilia.
Cuboidal epithelium The length of the tissue is almost equal to their width, appearing like a square.
Glandular epithelium Specialized epithelial cells that secrete substances at epithelial surface.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Why the body organs don’t get affected by the acids, base and other substances in the body? Because most of the organs are protected by epithelium layer.
