Plant -Water Relations
Chapter Name : Transport In Plants
Sub Topic Code : 103_11_11_02_04
Topic Name : Plant -Water Relations
Sub Topic Name : Imbibition
Introduction

It is a special type of diffusion where water is absorbed by parts of the plant such as seedlings and wood causing them to increase in the size.

Pre-Requisites:

• Parts of the plant. • Diffusion process.

Activity:

Sow a seed initially placed in water and a dry seed in the soil. See which seed shoots out first and study the effect of imbibition on seed germination.

Real Life Question:

In rainy season, what causes the wooden door to swell making it difficult to open or close?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Imbibition It is the uptake of water along the concentration gradient by the solid part of the plant such as seed and wood.
Pressure due to imbibition Causes the seedlings to emerge out of the soil into the open.
Water potential gradient Essential between the liquid and the absorbent for imbibition.

Gadgets How it can be used
Dry Seeds Take some dry seeds of any plant and put in water for long time. Look out for the swelling of the seed due to intake of water by seed
Real life uses :

Imbibitions is necessary for germination of seed and hence, for the growth of the plant.
