Energy Consideration: A Quantitative Study
Chapter Name : Electromagnetic Induction
Sub Topic Code : 101_12_06_07_01
Topic Name : Energy Consideration: A Quantitative Study
Sub Topic Name : Energy Consideration: A Quantitative Study
Introduction

When a conductor is moved in a magnetic field mechanical work has to be done against the magnetic field. This mechanical work is converted to electrical energy in the form of induced EMF and finally the electrical energy is converted to thermal energy.

Pre-Requisites:

Electromagnetic Induction, Motional Electromotive Force, Lenz’s Law, Law of Conservation of Energy

Activity:

Motional Electromotive Force

Real Life Question:

How to prove mathematically that Lenz’s Law follows the law of conservation of energy?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed. It can be only changed from one form to another

Motional Electromotive Force Its effect in the physical world
What you learn in Theory:

That Lenz’s Law abides by the law of conservation of energy

What you learn in Practice:

That the mechanical work done to move the conductor is converted into electrical energy and finally the energy is dissipated in the form of heat from the resistor. No energy is lost or gained in the process.
