Free Fall
Chapter Name : Gravitation
Sub Topic Code : 101_09_10_02_03
Topic Name : Free Fall
Sub Topic Name : Motion Of Objects Under The Influence Of Gravitational Force Of The Earth
Introduction

Due to the gravitational pull of the earth, the acceleration on the objects under this force is constant. Thus, in the absence of air (Presence of air causes air drag), the time taken for the flight depends on distance alone. They reach the ground at same time.

Pre-Requisites:

Gravity, Universal Law of Gravity

Activity:

From a certain height release a tennis ball and ping ball. Which one would touch the ground first?

Real Life Question:

In the absence of air, an iron block and a bid weather will reach the ground at the same time if they fall from same height. How is that possible?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Gravity Force that attracts you to Earth.
Acceleration due to gravity g = 9.8 ms-1
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Simulation Software It can be used to create a virtual motion of the objects. Observe that there is no relationship between the mass of an object and its velocity/acceleration of its fall
Real life uses :

The motion of objects under the influence of gravity like that of sky divers etc.

Places to visit :

Local Science Museum, exhibit on gravity

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Firing of cannon ball Though the motion is projectile and not purely vertical, the characteristic path is due to gravity only.
What you learn in Theory:

Acceleration of an object due to gravity is independent of mass

What you learn in Practice:

Practically demonstrate the above principal and also suggest sources of error. (frictional and resistive forces).
