Multiplying A Monomial By A Monomial
Chapter Name : Algebraic Expressions And Identities
Sub Topic Code : 104_08_09_07_02
Topic Name : Multiplying A Monomial By A Monomial
Sub Topic Name : Multiplying Three Or More Monomials
Introduction

To multiply three monomials, first multiply two monomials & then multiply that with the third monomial

Pre-Requisites:

Terms, coefficients, factors and variables of an algebraic expression

Activity:

Say you intend to paint your drawing room. You want paints of different patterns on one of the walls, meaning you need to use different types. Total cost of painting the wall = (Area) x (1/2 paint1) x (1/2 paint2) = (12) x (a/2) x (b/2). Try it out! Make your own patterns & calculate the cost on your own!

Real Life Question:

If you want to distribute chocolate boxes to retailers in the city, then you would need the no. of boxes, no, of shops, cost of each chocolate etc.

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Multiplying of three or more monomials Multiply 1st two monomials-the coefficients & variables and obtain product. Multiply the coefficient & variables with the coefficient & variable of the 3rd monomial.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Green colored boxes & green beads You want to match them up. If the green boxes are represented by variable ‘x’ & green beads by variable ‘y’, the total no. of green objects are xy (multiplication of x & y)
Real life uses :

Plane tickets: You want to purchase flight ticket; No. of customers(x), No. of planes at different timings (n,t) , No. of companies(y). All of this involves many monomials. Powers may depend on the number.

Places to visit :

Grocery stores, Supermarkets

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Fries, cold drinks & burgers Each of them representing a single variable, if you took 3 fries, 4 cold drinks & 2 burgers, total cost would be 3x + 4y + 2z. If this combination is to be served to every table with 3 people, then ‘t’ representing the no. of such tables, overall cost will be , (t) x (3x + 4y + 2z)
What you learn in Theory:

How to multiply three or more monomials

What you learn in Practice:

That different variables & the number of each of them is often met in situations. We would need to multiply multiple monomials there
