Properties Of Rational Numbers
Chapter Name : Rational Numbers
Sub Topic Code : 104_08_01_02_04
Topic Name : Properties Of Rational Numbers
Sub Topic Name : The Role Of (0)
Introduction

When we add nothing (i.e. 0 to) to anything, it remains the same. As such, when zero is added to any number, it remains same. Thus is known as the additive identity with respect to Zero.

Pre-Requisites:

Basic knowledge about addition and numbers

Activity:

From the learning aid activity, you can observe that, the level of water in the empty bucket does not rise and the level of water in the full bucket does not fall when we use the closed mug .

Real Life Question:

What remains when you add NOTHING to SOMETHING? Still something or nothing?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Additive Identity A number when added to another number results in the same number which was added, is said to obey additive identity with respect to addition
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Buckets, water, closed mug and an open mug Fill one bucket with water and leave another empty. Fill the empty bucket by using an open mug from the filled one. Once the second bucket is full, use the closed mug and try to fill the first one which is now empty.
Real life uses :

Each and every thing has an use of additive identity. Majority of the digital world works with 0 an 1

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Shop with zero sales The sales book will keep on adding 0 the previous value and keep it same when there is no sale
Salary The salary during absence will be 0 which on addition with net earnings will give the net salary of the employee for his working days
What you learn in Theory:

An Intro into additive identity of whole numbers, integers and rational numbers.

What you learn in Practice:

Practical importance of addition of Zero to understand higher mathematics
