Chapter Name : Understanding Quadrilateral
Sub Topic Code : 104_08_03_02_01
Topic Name : Polygons
Sub Topic Name : Classification Of Polygons
Introduction

Kite, pizza slice etc have shapes which seem to be formed out of closed curved consisting of lines joined at the ends. Such closed curves formed out of 3 or more lines are called polygons

Pre-Requisites:

Basic knowledge about polygons

Activity:

Draw polygons with different number of sides and observe how the angle included between 2 sides varies the shape. Cut outs can be made on card board sheets.

Real Life Question:

What is the shape of a pizza slice, kite, coke bottle cap?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Polygon A simple closed curve classified according to number of sides and vertices
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Scissors, paper, sketches Polygons are drawn on the paper as plane surfaces increasing one vertex and a side at a time.
Real life uses :

Books, Blankets, TV’s, Pizza cases, Tray’s, blocks, bricks, photographs, frames etc have polygons as perimeters or surfaces

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Floor tiles The floor tiles have also plane surfaces with four sides and four vertices.
Computer monitors The monitors form the shape of a rectangle or a square. Their faces are plane surfaces with four sides and four vertices
What you learn in Theory:

An Intro into polygons and their classification.

What you learn in Practice:

A polygon is defined by the number of its sides and vertices it has. Depending on their number, a polygon changes shape and is called by other names. Many complex structures like air-plane surfaces etc. use these basic polygons for design.
