Introduction

How to find the square of a number?

Pre-Requisites:

Basic knowledge about multiplication, square numbers and square roots

Activity:

A big number is split into small numbers and then evaluated using arithmetic operations. The results are added using the abacus. This result would equal the value of the square of big number.

Real Life Question:

How are the dimensions of area for a swimming pool of some volume derived?

Key Words / FlashCards

Gadgets How it can be used
Abacus Use abacus to represent the numbers. Note down the no. of beads on the top in the unit place for the number. Represent its square. Note down the no. of beads on the top in the unit place. Represent the split numbers and their squares and repeat the procedure.
Real life uses :

Construction, business transactions, computer games, animations

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Overhead tanks Computer games The area of the tank is measured by dividing the capacity of tank with its proposed height. We use square roots to determine sides or radius The squares and square roots are used in construction of computer games during interactions of characters with objects
What you learn in Theory:

Square of a number is the product of itself. A number which has integers as its square roots is called a perfect square. For big numbers, the numbers are split into small numbers and evaluated using arithmetic operations.

What you learn in Practice:

A big number is split into two small numbers and are expanded by multiplication. Now the result numbers are added to each other and the result is same as the square of that big number.
