Introduction

Kites have four sides and so does a slate. Any plane area having four sides is called a Quadrilateral. Quad means four; thus a four sided plane is quadrilateral.

Pre-Requisites:

Basic knowledge about lines

Activity:

How the plane surfaces are obtained; Simple open and simple closed curves can be obtained by cutting through edges. By overlapping, we can form non-simple open and closed curves.

Real Life Question:

What is the shape of a kite? Do slates and kites have anything in common?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Simple Curve A curve with no intersections
Closed Curve A curve whose ends are joined
Plane Curve A curve on a single plane
Open Curve A curve with open ends
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Scissors, paper, sketches Various plane shapes are drawn on the paper including simple, open and closed and non-simple curves. Cut them to form surfaces. Cut along the edges to form open and closed curves.
Real life uses :

Books, Blankets, TV’s, Pizza cases, Tray’s, blocks, bricks etc all have a quadrilateral planes

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Computer monitors The monitors form the shape of a quadrilateral. Their faces are plane surfaces with four sides, closed and simple.
Floor tiles The floor tiles have also plane surfaces with four sides, closed and simple.
What you learn in Theory:

An Intro into plane surfaces, simple open and closed curves and non-simple open and closed curves

What you learn in Practice:

The simple curves do not intersect. The non-simple curves intersect. Plane curves are formed on a plane surface. Many surfaces like those of buses, trains, air-planes are generated from these simple surfaces
