Sub Topic Code : 102_12_14_01_01
Topic Name : Carbohydrates
Sub Topic Name : Classification Of Carbohydrates
Introduction

1.Carbohydrates are produced by plants and form a very large group of naturally occurring organic compounds. 2.Some common examples are cane sugar, glucose, starch, etc. General formula, Cx(H2O)y 3.Carbohydrates are also called saccharides 4.Chemically, the carbohydrates may be defined as optically active polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or the compounds which produce such units on hydrolysis. 5.Some of the carbohydrates, which are sweet in taste, are also called sugars. 6.The most common sugar, used in our homes is named as sucrose whereas the sugar present in milk is known as lactose. 7.There are three types of saccharides: mono, oligo and poly.
