Thermodynamic Principles Of Metallurgy
Chapter Name : General Principles And Processes Of Isolation Of Elements
Sub Topic Code : 102_12_06_05_02
Topic Name : Thermodynamic Principles Of Metallurgy
Sub Topic Name : Applications
Introduction

• Oxides ores of Iron, after concentration through calcination/roasting (to remove water, to decompose carbonates and to oxidise sulphides) are mixed with limestone and coke and fed into a Blast furnace from its top. • In the Blast furnace, reduction of iron oxides takes place in different temperature ranges. • Limestone is also decomposed to CaO which removes silicate impurity of the ore as slag. The slag is in molten state and separates out from iron. • Cast iron is different from pig iron and is made by melting pig iron with scrap iron and coke using hot air blast. • It has slightly lower carbon content (about 3%) and is extremely hard and brittle.

Pre-Requisites:

Metals, Metallurgy, thermodynamics

Activity:

Iron comes In different varieties such as cast iron, pig iron, wrought iron and is used for different purposes.

Real Life Question:

How is Iron extracted from its ore?
