Isomerism In Coordination Compounds
Chapter Name : Coordination Compounds
Sub Topic Code : 102_12_09_04_05
Topic Name : Isomerism In Coordination Compounds
Sub Topic Name : Ionization Isomerism
Introduction

In organic chemistry, cis/trans isomerism (also known as geometric isomerism) is a form of stereoisomerism describing the relative orientation of functional groups within a molecule.

Pre-Requisites:

Isomerism In Coordination Compounds

Activity:

DNA.

Real Life Question:

What are isomers?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Ionization Isomerism Certain isomeric pairs occur that differ only in that two ionic groups exchange positions within (and without) the primary coordination sphere. These are called ionization isomers and are exemplified by the two compounds, pentaamminebromocobalt sulfate, [CoBr(NH 3) 5]SO 4, and pentaamminesulfatocobalt bromide, [Co(SO 4)(NH 3) 5]Br.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Isomerization Isomerization is the process by which one molecule is transformed into another molecule which has exactly the same atoms, but the atoms are rearranged.
Real life uses :

Where the atoms making up the various isomers are joined up in a different order, this is known as structural isomerism.

Places to visit :

Chemistry laboratory.

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Propanol It has the formula C3H8O (or C3H7OH) and occurs as two isomers: propan-1-ol (n-propyl alcohol; I) and propan-2-ol (isopropyl alcohol; II).
What you learn in Theory:

Certain isomeric pairs occur that differ only in that two ionic groups exchange positions within (and without) the primary coordination sphere. These are called ionization isomers and are exemplified by the two compounds, pentaamminebromocobalt sulfate, [CoBr(NH 3) 5]SO 4, and pentaamminesulfatocobalt bromide, [Co(SO 4)(NH 3) 5]Br.

What you learn in Practice:

The bromide ion is coordinated to the cobalt (3+) ion, and the sulfate ion is outside the coordination sphere; in the latter the sulfate ion occurs within the coordination sphere, and the bromide ion is outside it.
