Carbohydrates
Chapter Name : Biomolecules
Sub Topic Code : 102_12_14_01_08
Topic Name : Carbohydrates
Sub Topic Name : Polysaccharides
Introduction

1. Poly saccharides contain a large number of mono saccharide units joined together by glycosidic linkages. 2.They mainly act as the food storage or structural materials. 3.Starch is the main storage poly saccharide of plants. 4.It is the most important dietary source for human beings. 5.High content of starch is found in cereals, roots, tubers and some vegetables. 6.Cellulose occurs exclusively in plants and it is the most abundant organic substance in plant kingdom. 7.It is a predominant constituent of cell wall of plant cells. 8.The carbohydrates are stored in animal body as glycogen. 9.It is also known as animal starch because its structure is similar to amylopectin and is rather more highly branched. 10.It is present in liver, muscles and brain. 11.When the body needs glucose, enzymes break the glycogen down to glucose. 12.Glycogen is also found in yeast and fungi.

Pre-Requisites:

Elements, sugar, organic molecule
