Bond Parameters
Chapter Name : Chemical Bonding And Molecular Structure
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_04_04_01
Topic Name : Bond Parameters
Sub Topic Name : Bond Length
Introduction

• Bond length is defined as the distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms in a molecule. • The covalent radius is measured approximately as the radius of an atom’s core which is in contact with the core of another atom in a bond . • The van der Waals radius is the overall size of the atom which includes its valence shell in a non-bonded situation.

Pre-Requisites:

Chemical bond, ionic bond, Van der Waals forces

Activity:

Measuring lengths of objects is important to determine the physical space they occupy.

Real Life Question:

How can you find out the size of molecules?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Bond length • Bond length is defined as the distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms in a molecule.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Measuring tape, two basket balls Measure the distance between the centre of one basketball with the centre of another basket ball kept close to each other.
Real life uses :

Bond length helps to determine the space molecules occupy in a structure.

Examples Explainations
Physical objects All physical objects (living –nonliving) have physical dimensions .e.g. length.
What you learn in Theory:

Bond length is a physical dimension which tells the size of a molecules.

What you learn in Practice:

Bond length helps to compare sizes of molecules.
