Thermodynamic Terms
Chapter Name : Thermodynamics
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_06_01_03
Topic Name : Thermodynamic Terms
Sub Topic Name : The State Of The System
Introduction

• The system must be described by specifying quantitatively each of the properties such as its pressure (p), volume (V), and temperature (T ) as well as the composition of the system. • We need to describe the system by specifying it before and after the change. • We specify the state of the system by state functions or state variables. • Variables like p, V, T are called state variables or state functions because their values depend only on the state of the system and not on how it is reached.

Pre-Requisites:

Energy, transformation, equilibrium, thermodynamic system

Activity:

Example: In a cooking recipe it is mentioned to what degree the cake needs to be baked or at what temperature a particular dish needs to be cooked.

Real Life Question:

How do u describe a thermodynamic system?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Thermodynamic system • A system in thermodynamics is a space in which observations are made and remaining space constitutes the surroundings.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Thermometer, Luke warm water in a glass. The state of the system can be described by mentioning the temperature.
Real life uses :

State of the system helps to define the characteristics of many energy transformation processes.

Examples Explainations
Mixing salt in luke warm water In this system, the state of the system is described by the amount of water taken, the temperature of the water etc.
What you learn in Theory:

Thermodynamic systems are classified according to the exchange of energy or matter between the system and the surroundings.

What you learn in Practice:

State variables such as volume, temperature, pressure define the system.
