Electronic Configurations Of Elements And Periodic Table
Chapter Name : Classification Of Elements And Periodicity In Properties
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_03_05_01
Topic Name : Electronic Configurations Of Elements And Periodic Table
Sub Topic Name : Electronic Configurations Of Elements And Periodic Table
Introduction

• The distribution of electrons into energy levels of an atom is called the electronic configuration. Atoms have different shells (n) and subshells (orbitals). Electrons are filled into different subshells, also referred to as orbitals (s, p, d, and f) in an atom depending on the lowest to highest energy levels. The periodic table can be used as a guide for electron configurations. An element’s location in the Periodic Table reflects the quantum numbers (n) of the last orbital filled. The number of elements in each period is twice the number of atomic orbitals available in the energy level that is being filled. • Elements in the same vertical column or group have similar valence shell electronic configurations, the same number of electrons in the outer orbitals, and similar properties. • Elements in same groups as they have the same number and same distribution of electrons in their outermost orbitals.

Pre-Requisites:

Element, periodic properties, classification

Activity:

Objects with similar usage or characteristics fall in the same group.

Real Life Question:

Why do certain things have similar characteristics?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Electronic configuration The distribution of electrons into energy levels of an atom is called the electronic configuration.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
A periodic table Check out the arrangement of elements in the periodic table.
Real life uses :

Things are classified and grouped according to similar properties between them.

Places to visit :

A classroom, kitchen, garage

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Tools Tool used for eating (spoon) is found in the kitchen whereas a hammer is found in the garage or inside toolbox in the storeroom. Similarly elements with similar behavior are groups in the same level.
What you learn in Theory:

The periodic table consists of vertical groups and horizontal periods. The periodic table can be used as a guide for electron configurations of elements. The number of elements in each period is twice the number of atomic orbitals available in the energy level that is being filled.

What you learn in Practice:

Objects grouped into categories have similar properties.
