Laws Of Chemical Combinations
Chapter Name : Some Basic Concepts Of Chemistry
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_01_05_04
Topic Name : Laws Of Chemical Combinations
Sub Topic Name : Gay Lussac's Law Of Gaseous Volumes
Introduction

Gay Lussac gave the Law of gaseous volumes which states “at constant temperature and pressure, the volumes of gaseous reactants and products can be expressed as ratios of small whole numbers. These whole numbers are the coefficients of the balanced equation”.

Pre-Requisites:

Mole, gas, volume, Dalton’s law of multiple proportion, gravimetric, volumetric

Real Life Question:

Given you have 1 litre of nitrogen gas and 3 litres of hydrogen gas, how much ammonia gas would u get?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Law of gaseous volumes At constant temperature and pressure, the volumes of gaseous reactants and products can be expressed as ratios of small whole numbers.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Chemical reactions Take any gaseous chemical reactions and balance the coefficients of the reactants and products. Now figure out either one of the reactants or products if the rest are known.
Real life uses :

A balanced chemical gaseous reaction, would tell how much of a product would form in litres or moles, if the moles or volumes of reactants are known.

Places to visit :

Check out the gaseous chemical reactions in any chemistry book and figure out the moles of the reactants and products.

Examples Explainations
What you learn in Theory:

At constant temperature and pressure, the volumes of gaseous reactants and products can be expressed as ratios of small whole numbers.

What you learn in Practice:

If you have a chemical reaction, the final moles of the product is not the sum of the moles of the reactants.
