Equilibrium In Physical Processes
Chapter Name : Equilibrium
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_07_02_02
Topic Name : Equilibrium In Physical Processes
Sub Topic Name : Liquid - Vapor Equilibrium
Introduction

• At equilibrium the pressure exerted by the water molecules at a given temperature remains constant and is called the equilibrium vapour pressure of water. • Vapour pressure of water increases with temperature. • For any liquid at 1 atmospheric pressure (1.013 bar), the temperature at which the liquid and vapors are at equilibrium Is called normal boiling point of that liquid.

Pre-Requisites:

Boiling point, melting point

Activity:

Balancing a see saw on its fulcrum. Balance a weight balance.

Real Life Question:

Why does the boiling point of water decrease at high altitude?

Examples Explainations
See saw To balance a see saw equal weights need to be on both sides of the fulcrum.
What you learn in Theory:

• At equilibrium the pressure exerted by the water molecules at a given temperature remains constant and is called the equilibrium vapour pressure of water.

What you learn in Practice:

• Boiling point of a liquid depends on atmospheric pressure. • At higher altitudes, the boiling point decreases as the atmospheric pressure decreases.
