Introduction

• Matter is made up of one or different type of elements. • A group of atoms existing together as one species having characteristic properties is called a molecule. • The attractive force which holds various constituents (atoms, ions, etc.) together in different molecules is called a chemical bond. • The evolution of various theories of valence and the interpretation of the nature of chemical bonds have closely been related to the developments in understanding the structure of atom, the electronic configuration of elements and the periodic table.

Pre-Requisites:

Matter, noble gases, molecules, atoms, periodic table

Activity:

All matter, piece of wood, bucket, chalk, universe are all composed of molecules

Real Life Question:

How does matter form?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Molecules • A Molecule is a group of different atoms held together by a chemical bond.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Magnet and iron object See how attractive forces exist between the magnet and the iron object. Similarly a chemical bond is formed between two atoms.
Real life uses :

Bonding helps to bring stability

Places to visit :

Kitchen, garage, park, garden

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Wood, water, salt All matter is made up of molecules. Molecules are made from atoms by chemical bonding
What you learn in Theory:

All matter is made up of atoms. Atoms combine by chemical bonding to produce molecules.

What you learn in Practice:
