Intermolecular Forces
Chapter Name : States Of Matter
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_05_02_04
Topic Name : Intermolecular Forces
Sub Topic Name : Dipole Induced Dipole Forces
Introduction

• Attractive forces that occur between a polar molecule having permanent dipole and molecules lacking permanent dipole are called dipole-induced dipole forces. Induced dipole moment depends upon the dipole moment present in the permanent dipole and the polarisability of the electrically neutral molecule. • Larger molecules can be easily polarized. • High polarisability increases the strength of attraction.

Pre-Requisites:

molecule, dipole, ion, polarize

Activity:

Fish breath inside water using the oxygen dissolved in the water.

Real Life Question:

What makes oxygen dissolve in water?

Gadgets How it can be used
aquarium In an aquarium water is oxygenated by bubbling oxygen gas in it.
Real life uses :

Dissolution of oxygen inside water.

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Oxygen dissolving in water Oxygen a neutral molecule dissolves in water (a polar molecule) by the formation of dipole induced dipole forces between them.
What you learn in Theory:

Dipole induced dipole forces are formed when a polar molecule polarizes a neutral molecule.

What you learn in Practice:

Dipole induced dipole forces allow oxygen to mix with water.
