Chapter Name : Redox Reactions
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_08_03_01
Topic Name : Oxidation Number
Sub Topic Name : Oxidation Number
Introduction

Oxidation number denotes the oxidation state of an element in a compound.

Pre-Requisites:

Oxidising agent, reducing agent, oxidation, reduction

Activity:

Rust is an oxidized form of Iron

Real Life Question:

How can you tell how many electrons are present in the valence shell of an atom.?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Reducing agent A reagent which lowers the oxidation number of an element in a given substance. These reagents are also called as reductants.
Oxidising agent A reagent which can increase the oxidation number of an element in a given substance. These reagents are called as oxidants also.
Oxidation Oxidation is the loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation state by a molecule, atom, or ion.
Reduction Reduction is the gain of electrons or a decrease in oxidation state by a molecule, atom, or ion.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Daniel cell In the Daniel cell, copper and zinc electrodes are immersed in a solution of copper(II) sulfate and zinc sulfate respectively. At the anode, zinc is oxidized. At the cathode, copper is reduced. Then calculate the oxidation of both the reactants.
Real life uses :

In titration: useful where you have to work out reacting proportions for use in titration reactions where you don't have enough information to work out the complete ionic equation.

What you learn in Theory:

Oxidation number represents the degree of oxidation of an element in a substance. This degree of oxidation (often termed the elements oxidation state) is with the exception of coordination compounds where a different definition applies, the imaginary charge on the atom if the substance were broken down into ions.

What you learn in Practice:

Oxidation state shows the total number of electrons which have been removed from an element (a positive oxidation state) or added to an element (a negative oxidation state) to get to its present state.
