Stoichiometry And Stoichiometric Calculations
Chapter Name : Some Basic Concepts Of Chemistry
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_01_10_01
Topic Name : Stoichiometry And Stoichiometric Calculations
Sub Topic Name : Stoichiometry And Stoichiometric Calculations
Introduction

In stoichiometry, we mainly talk about the quantity (how much) of reactants and products are there in a chemical reaction. We can interconvert mass into moles into molecules and vice versa. We can also make volume calculations.

Pre-Requisites:

Mass, atom, element, compound, molar mass, chemical formula

Activity:

Observe plants around and write down the equation of photosynthesis. Observe how a piece of iron left out in the open rusts. Chemical reaction between iron (Fe) and Oxygen (O).

Real Life Question:

How much oxygen is produced when plants carry out photosynthesis if you give them 10 grams of CO2?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
stoichiometry Quantity of reactants and products are there in a chemical reaction.
Balanced chemical equation Equal number of atoms of each element on both sides of a chemical equation.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Any substance, e.g. mixing salt in water Observe how the salt crystals mix into the water. Write down a reaction for this.
Real life uses :

Stoichiometric calculations help to find out the amount of any reactant or product in a chemical reaction.

Places to visit :

Observe how a piece of iron left out in the open rusts

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Iron rusting Iron is metal which forms an oxide when exposed to oxygen in the air. The reddish brown coating seen on it is iron oxide.
What you learn in Theory:

In stoichiometry, we mainly talk about the quantity (how much) of reactants and products are there in a chemical reaction. We can interconvert mass into moles into molecules and vice versa. We can also make volume calculations.

What you learn in Practice:

Stoichiometric calculations give us an estimate of how much reactants we need to mix to get the desired amount of product.
