Sub Topic Name : Preparation From Unsaturated Hydrocarbons |
Unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrocarbons that have double or triple covalent bonds between adjacent carbon atoms. Those with at least one double bond are called alkenes and those with at least one triple bond are called alkynes.
Alkanes

What are Unsaturated hydrocarbons?
Key Words | Definitions (pref. in our own words) |
---|---|
addition reactions | An addition reaction, in organic chemistry, is in its simplest terms an organic reaction where two or more molecules combine to form a larger one. |
Gadgets | How it can be used |
---|---|
Gasoline | A mixture of alkanes from pentane up to about decane. |
Used mainly for heating and cooking purposes.
Chemistry laboratory.
Examples | Explainations |
---|---|
2-butyne | An alkyne with chemical formula CH3C?CCH3. Produced artificially, it is a colorless, volatile, pungent liquid at standard temperature and pressure. |
Unsaturated hydrocarbons with both double and triple bonds have the suffix -enyne and are handled in a similar manner.
The physical properties of unsaturated hydrocarbons are very similar to those of the corresponding saturated compounds. They are slightly soluble in water.
