Sub Topic Name : Types Of System |
• The systems can be classified according to the movements of matter and energy in or out of the system. • There are three types of systems: open, closed, and isolated. • In an open system, there is exchange of energy and matter between system and surroundings • In a closed system, there is no exchange of matter, but exchange of energy is possible between system and the surroundings. • In an isolated system, there is no exchange of energy or matter between the system and the surroundings.
Energy, transformation, equilibrium, thermodynamic system
Various types of systems are present around us. Example a boiling pot of water is an open system. A boiling water pot with a lid on is a closed system.
Does a boiling pot of water a thermodynamic system?
Key Words | Definitions (pref. in our own words) |
---|---|
Thermodynamic system | • A system in thermodynamics is a space in which observations are made and remaining space constitutes the surroundings. |
Gadgets | How it can be used |
---|---|
Water, food colour, glass | Take water in a glass and add food colour into it. The glass of water + food color is the system and the room where the glass is kept is the surroundings. This is an open system as there is exchange of matter and energy. |
Thermodynamic systems help energy transformations. E.g. converting chemical energy of battery to electrical energy for lighting a torch.

Boiling pot of water | Water boiling in a pot is example of a thermodynamic system. If you put a lid on it, it becomes a closed system. |
Thermodynamic systems are classified according to the exchange of energy or matter between the system and the surroundings.
There are a huge number of small thermodynamic systems everywhere.
