Kossel-Lewis Approach To Chemical Bonding
Chapter Name : Chemical Bonding And Molecular Structure
Sub Topic Code : 102_11_04_02_01
Topic Name : Kossel-Lewis Approach To Chemical Bonding
Sub Topic Name : Kossel - Lewis Approach to Chemical Bonding
Introduction

• In 1916 when Kossel and Lewis succeeded independently in giving a satisfactory and first provided some logical explanation of valence which was based on the inertness of noble gases. • Lewis postulated that atoms achieve the stable octet when they are linked by chemical bonds. • Chemical bonds can form either by the transfer of electrons (ionic bond) or by sharing of electrons (covalent bonding).

Pre-Requisites:

Matter, noble gases, molecules, atoms, periodic table, chemical bond

Activity:

All matter, piece of wood, bucket, chalk, universe are all composed of molecules.

Real Life Question:

How does matter form?

Key Words / FlashCards
Key Words Definitions (pref. in our own words)
Electrostatic bond • The bond formed, as a result of the electrostatic attraction between the positive and negative ions was termed as the electrovalent bond.
Learning aids / Gadgets
Gadgets How it can be used
Magnet and iron object See how attractive forces exist between the magnet and the iron object. Similarly a chemical bond is formed between two atoms.
Real life uses :

Bonding helps to bring stability, stable octet in case of chemical species.

Places to visit :

Kitchen, garage, park, garden

Practical examples around us
Examples Explainations
Wood, water, salt All matter is made up of molecules. Molecules are made from atoms by chemical bonding.
What you learn in Theory:

All matter is made up of atoms. Atoms combine by chemical bonding to produce molecules.

What you learn in Practice:

Chemical bonding helps to make different types of substances. Bonding takes place as all elements attempt to get a stable octet in their valence shells.
